How does mom guilt change as our children grow, and how does growing up change the way we understand our own mothers?
In this episode of The Motherline Thread, Melissa and Bethany continue their conversation about mom guilt by looking at motherhood through the teenage years, adulthood, and eventually grandmotherhood.
As children grow, the relationship between parent and child begins to change. Teenagers and young adults become increasingly independent, making choices that may look different from the ones their parents would make for them. Melissa and Bethany explore what it means to give our children room to become their own people while making sure they know that different choices do not mean rejection and that love does not depend on following the same path.
They also consider what happens on the other side of that growing up. As children become adults themselves, they may begin to see their parents differently. The people who once seemed to simply be Mom or Dad become whole people with histories, struggles, uncertainties, relationships, and things they were still working through while raising children.
From Melissa’s perspective as a grandmother, the conversation widens again. Distance and experience can offer a different view of motherhood, including the realization that so much of what once felt enormous can look different when we are no longer standing in the middle of it.
Throughout the conversation, Melissa and Bethany reflect on the grace that can become possible across generations when we make room for more than one experience to be true. Our children can choose differently without rejecting us. We can understand our parents more fully without dismissing our own experiences. And growing older can give both generations the opportunity to see one another with greater perspective and compassion.
Maybe growing up is not only about becoming independent from our parents.
Maybe it also gives us the chance to meet them again as people.
The Motherline Thread is a podcast about what we inherit, what shapes us, and what we choose to carry forward.
Hosted by Melissa Carroll and Bethany Longer, the podcast explores topics such as motherhood, identity, generational patterns, relationships, personal growth, belief systems, and the evolving stories we live inside.
Together, Melissa and Bethany explore these conversations from two perspectives: mother and daughter, different generations, and different lived experiences, creating space for honesty, discernment, understanding, and growth.
Rather than rushing toward simple answers, The Motherline Thread values thoughtful conversation, listening, and learning from one another without pressure to have everything figured out.
