When the Pedestal Cracks

What happens when the people, beliefs, and expectations we once relied on no longer look the way we thought they did?

In this episode of The Motherline Thread, Melissa and Bethany explore what happens when the pedestals we build—or inherit—begin to crack. Sometimes those pedestals hold people we admire: parents, mentors, teachers, or public figures. Other times, they hold belief systems, institutions, expectations, or ideas about how life is supposed to work.

A pedestal can offer stability, belonging, direction, and a sense of certainty. But what happens when lived experience begins to challenge what we believed? When someone we admired disappoints us? When following the rules doesn't lead to the outcome we expected? Or when we discover that the people we looked up to were always more human and complicated than we understood?

Together, Melissa and Bethany reflect on their different experiences of disillusionment, the temptation to replace one certainty with another, and the ways our need for security can shape what we place above ourselves. They also consider what happens when we become the ones others look up to—and the pressure that can come with being seen as wise, dependable, or capable of having the answers.

The conversation moves through the complicated space between admiration and disappointment, understanding and accountability, and the desire for certainty and the reality of an unpredictable life. It explores how we can recognize someone's humanity without dismissing the impact of their choices, and how we can appreciate what a belief or experience once gave us without needing to carry all of it forward.

And as the Motherline continues across generations, another possibility emerges: just as we have reconsidered the people and ideas that shaped us, our children may one day reconsider us. What might it look like to make room for that without seeing their different choices as rejection?

Perhaps the goal isn't to stop admiring people, believing in things, or seeking direction. Perhaps it's learning to hold those things with enough openness for questions, change, and complexity.

Maybe maturity isn't about finding the right pedestal. Maybe it's learning how to stand on the ground together.
